Mysterious Ghost Towns

Miner’s Delight is one of my favorite ghost towns. It’s remote and quiet, and I was the only one walking around. What’s left of the town is in a spectacular setting, deep in the woods.

It began as Hamilton City, with the Miner’s Delight Mine, where gold was found in 1867. The town was then named after the mine, and reached a peak population of 100 residents.

Oregon Trail History

The Oregon Trail Ruts can be seen in many areas of the country, but the deepest and most visible ones are near the town of Guernsey. The wheels of countless heavily-laden wagons carved the ruts up to 5 feet deep into the sandstone rock.

Some of the people who used this trail included mountain men carrying trade items during the 1830s, settlers headed to Oregon in the 1840s, gold seekers after 1849, and military wagons during the 1860s. Explorer John C. Fremont camped in the area in July, 1842.

Old West History

Cody has a wonderful outdoor museum called Old Trail Town. The museum was begun in 1967 by Bob Edgar, a Wyoming native and archaeologist. It’s a fascinating collection of 27 buildings dating from 1879 to 1901.

There are at least one hundred horse drawn vehicles, and a massive collection of old west artifacts and memorabilia. It’s a wonderful place, complete with many old wagons.

Dinosaurs and Fossils

Thermopolis is famous for its hot springs, and for the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. It’s one of the better dinosaur museums, containing well-curated fossils from many locations around the world.

There is an excellent representation of both small fossils and massive dinosaurs. Some are casts, but many are actual fossils, including this ammonite, which is over 200 million years old.
