Old Spanish Missions

Tumacacori Mission was established in 1691 in the area known as New Spain. Father Eusebio Francisco Kino began Tumacacori, the first mission in what is now Arizona.

The O’odham, Yaqui, and Apache met with Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, settlers, and soldiers at this site.

Voices from the past:

These died: Cristobal, father of the captain. He died of the vomit; Rosa died of the yellow vomit; Eusebio died of the same; Juan died of the urine detention; Juanico, first son of the captain, died of throat inflammation.” Jose de Torres Perea, December, 1743.

Archaeological Sites

Besh Ba Gowah, meaning “place of metal” in Apache, is a sprawling complex of 200 rooms, located in Globe, Arizona. It was built and inhabited by the Salado people from 1225 AD to 1400 AD.

Besh Ba Gowah is a spectacular archaeological park, and unique because there are many interiors with artifacts lying as if they were left there yesterday.

A Good Ghost Story

John Wesley Heath was the mastermind of a robbery known as the Bisbee Massacre, in which several citizens including a pregnant woman and a deputy were shot and killed.

Heath claimed to know nothing about the crime, but he was sentenced to life in prison at the Yuma Territorial Prison.

The citizens gathered in Tombstone and mobbed the jail where Heath was being held. They took Heath on Feb 22, 1884, blindfolded him, and hung him from a telephone pole at First and Toughnut Streets.

An apparition, believed to be the ghost of ”John Wesley Heath has been seen walking at night down Toughnut Street.

Stories of Buried Treasure

A word about the Lost Dutchman Mine:

There is a legend that tells of the time when the Jesuits were expelled from the Missions by Spain.

The Jesuit priests traveled up into the Superstition Mountains and buried the treasures of the church there.

The Jesuits left a series of carved clues including hearts, a priest figure, and diamond figures carved into Saguaro cacti and onto rocks in the Superstition Mountains.

Many have searched for the treasure, including the Peraltas, a group of Mexican men who ventured into the mountains in 1846. The entire group was massacred by Apache Indians.

The most famous of the treasure hunters was a Dutchman named Jacob Waltz, who did find gold. Waltz died in 1891, and took his secret with him to his grave.
